Maak je klaar om te swingen bij Tropical Night!
Na het succes van vorig jaar is Tropical Night terug! Op zaterdag 8 april slaan De Vorstin en Stichting Hilversum One de handen ineen voor deze loeiwarme en muzikale avond met dansbare livemuziek. (English below)
Tropical Night is dé perfecte manier om vast op te warmen voor het Afrikadag Festival, dat op 27 mei in Hilversum zal plaatsvinden. De Haagse groep Passion UrbanKawina brengt een gevarieerde mix van urban, merengue, bachata, zouk en meer naar Tropical Night. De Rotterdamse band Tabanka zal je in beweging brengen met hun Kaap Verdiaanse funatá, gemixt met hedendaagse pop en jazz. Een ding is zeker: deze voorjaarsdag in april zal aanvoelen als een zwoele zomeravond.
TABANKA
De Kaapverdische groep Tabanka, rechtstreeks uit Rotterdam, brengt een eigen en hedendaagse interpratie van funaná; dé populaire dansmuziek van Kaapverdië.
De swingende, energieke muziek van het Kaapverdiaanse eiland Santiago was verboden tijdens het Portugese bewind vanwege het schijnbaar opruiende en sensuele karakter. Het mag dan vanzelf spreken dat het sinds Kaapverdië onafhankelijk werd in 1975, deel ging uitmaken van de Kaapverdische identiteit. De jonge formatie Tabanka laat zich inspireren door grote artiesten uit eerdere generaties zoals Bulimundo, Américo Brito en natuurlijk Bitori.
PASSION UrbanKawina
De Haagse band PASSION is met hun zelfbedachte ‘Urban Kawina’ style een geheel eigen weg ingeslagen. De 15-koppige band mixed kawina met diverse andere muziekstijlen op een geheel eigen wijze. De manier van spelen is hierdoor vrij uniek. Bij PASSION komt alles aan bod: urban nummers, merengue, zouk, bachata, socca, chutney en Nederlandstalig. Dat allemaal met kawina als basis. Zodra de band zijn plaats inneemt en zijn klanken ten gehore brengt behoort stilstaan simpelweg niet meer tot de opties.
PASSION bestaat inmiddels al zeven jaar en timmert hard aan de weg. De unieke en opzwepende mix van muziekgenres heeft de band geen windeieren gelegd. Het gezelschap was het afgelopen jaar op een aantal grote muziekfestivals en feesten te bewonderen, zoals Het Kwaku festival, Gay Pride, Zomercarnaval en Borgoe meets Parbo. De shows waren een groot succes en ook dit jaar zal de band op verschillende podia te vinden zijn.
Op dit moment werkt de band ook aan nieuw eigen materiaal. PASSION is dus absoluut een band om scherp in de gaten te houden!
After last year’s succes, Tropical Night is back for another round of dancing, music and heat! On saturday the 8th of april, De Vorstin and Stichting Hilversum One join forces to create a steamy hot dance night with energetic live music. A perfect way to kick off the Afrikaday Festival, that will take place after.
Hailing from the Hague, PASSION UrbanKawina will bring a varied mix of urban, merengue, bachata, zouk and more. On top of that, headliner TABANKA will get you moving with their own interpertation of funatá, a musical style from Cape Verde.
TABANKA
Tabanka is a young Cape Verdean group from Rotterdam, whose music has been inspired by that of Cape Verdean artists from an older generation, such as Code di Dona, Bulimundo, Américo Brito and of course Bitori.
The group has a fresh and contemporary take on funaná: the upbeat, energetic and festive music and dance style, once forbidden by the Portuguese colonial rulers, that became part of post-independence Cape Verdean identity in the eighties. Funaná was derived from the music from the descendants of slaves, mixed with contemporary pop and jazz. The base of the funaná are the diatonic accordion (gaita) and the rasping sound of the ferrinho, a notched metal bar played as a Caribbean guiro.
PASSION UrbanKawina
The live band PASSION has taken its own path with their self-invented ‘Urban Kawina’ style. The band consisting of 15 musicians, mixes kawina with various other music styles in its own unique way. The way of playing is therefore quite unique. Everything is covered at PASSION: urban numbers, merengue, zouk, bachata, socca, chutney and Dutch. All with kawina as a base. As soon as the band takes it’s place and plays it’s sounds, standing still is simply no longer an option.
PASSION has been around for seven years now and is working hard on own new material. The unique and exciting mix of music genres has done the band no harm. The band could be admired at a number of major music festivals and parties last year, such as The Kwaku Festival, Gay Pride, Summer Carnival and Borgoe meets Parbo. The shows were a great success and again this year the band will perform on different stages.
